Look Back, Look Ahead: Fairfax County News to Know
School start times, red light cameras and more were in the news this week in the area.
No Red Light Cameras in Fairfax Co.
Despite other jurisdictions reaping major profits from red light and speed cameras, Fairfax County does not have plans at this time to re-start its program, officials told Patch. However, police will be cracking down on aggressive driving this summer in a three-wave enforcement effort that started Friday.
School Start Times
School start times at all levels came up at meetings this week in Fairfax County. Fairfax County Public Schools are hiring a consultant to look further into high school start times. And the opening of new schools across the county means later start times at select elementary schools — and parents are concerned about how late elementary school starts times (and end times) may impact both health and children's learning.
Northern Virginia Housing Market Improves
Housing inventory is down and prices are up, indicating the Northern Virginia housing market is improving. This follows national trends.
Quick Arrest in Patel Case
Fairfax County Police have made an arrest in the death of Bharat Patel, who was found dead near his apartment in the 11900 block of Winterthur Lane in Reston just eight days ago. Patel, 40, was part-owner of the new Hunters Woods Dunkin' Donuts, which opened on June 6.
Senior Pranks
For some reason, many high schoolers still see the senior prank as a right of passage. A few students from Herndon High School were suspended and not allowed to walk at graduation this week for their role in a senior prank involving baby oil. Seven South Lakes High School students were charged with trespassing on June 8 when they were caught by Fairfax County Police while setting up a senior prank.
High School Coach Faces Steroids Charges
A man who was most recently associated with the West Springfield High School football program and taught at Mountain View Alternative High School in Centreville was arrested on Tuesday in the Sully Plaza Shopping Center in Chantilly. He has been charged with possession with intent to distribute steroids and conspiracy to distribute steroids.
Coming This Week…
The beautiful weekend weather will continue through Monday, but temperatures will climb into the mid-90s by Wednesday.
Thousands of local metro riders will be getting used to Metro’s Rush+ program. It's designed to make commuting during peak rush hour times faster for riders, and may eliminate transfers for some riders.
