Last Minute Holiday Opportunities
A few local organizations are still in need of help for holiday projects.
If you've been reading this column the past few weeks—or even if you haven't—and you still haven't taken some time out of your schedule to volunteer, fret not! There are still a few local charities who are looking for holiday volunteers and donations in the next few days:
- Offender Aid and Restoration is looking for holiday gift deliverers for the rest of the week to pick up gifts from its Arlington location and take them to pre-determined homes within your own area code. The recipients of the presents are local children of incarcerated offenders. OAR itself specializes in providing services to incarcerated persons in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and the District. In addition to providing services for families of offenders, they also provide counseling and career training to decrease the likelihood of recidivism. Non-holiday volunteering opportunities are also available in mentoring, tutoring and counseling. Information on volunteer opportunities can be found here.
- Bethany House of Northern Virginia is also looking for seasonal volunteers to run their on-site Christmas shop, which services Bethany House's clients: women and children who have suffered from domestic violence. Donations of clothing for the shop are also still being collected. They also need volunteers to prepare a holiday meal for their clients and former clients. Bethany House provides counseling and support services, including housing, for abused women and children. More information on volunteering can be found here.
- D.C. Jewish Community Center is holding one of its annual Days of Service on Dec. 24. On average, the Community Center brings in more than 1000 volunteers on their service days to work on local projects like hosting holiday parties, collecting and distributing needed items, donating blood, and serving meals to the homeless. Donations of clothes, food and toiletries are still needed, and those interested in volunteering can email the group at volunteer@washingtondcjcc.org.
