J & J Sandwich Shop

Huntington hidden gem with quick service and delicious food for less

If you’ve been searching for a local eatery that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that won’t break the bank, J&J Sandwich shop on Huntington Avenue is the best choice around. It features a wide variety of omelets and breakfast platters to submarines and speciality sandwiches.

Breakfast will only set you back $2 to $5 and lunch or dinner is only $4 to $9. I ordered  a crab cake sandwich ($3.79), a cold cut submarine ($5.49) and a bowl of fresh watermelon ($1.75).

Even though another customer ordered right after me, it took a mere 10 minutes for both orders to come up. Had it taken longer, there was an inviting arcade game aginst the wall to pass the time.

The interior is large enough to seat several people, but the restaurant is primarily a local take out spot. Behind the counter are portraits of the owner’s family members and the decor is more 90’s New York deli than Alexandria chic, but the constant stream of customers was proof of their success.

The crab cake sandwich was unbelievable for the price and served steaming hot on a bun with fresh, grilled onions and special tater sauce. The sub was large and featured several meats, though only one kind of cheese. When they said fresh watermelon, it’s what they meant. The sweet juicy cubes of melon were ripe and generously overflowing the saran wrapped bowl.

This place is perfect for picking up breakfast and lunch and is right on the way to the Metro for weekends meals. Don’t forget to try one of their platter specials!
