Huntington Community Launches Flood Levee Petition Drive

HCA invites local residents to meet at community center Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Huntington Community Association (HCA) will begin a petition drive at 12 p.m. on Saturday at the Huntington Community Center to collect signatures to present to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in April to request funding for permanent flood protection in Huntington.

"We need your help in an effort to collect signatures and promote an email/letter campaign to ask the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to fund a levee for Huntington," the HCA president posted on a community Facebook page Friday. "We'll conclude this drive on April 8 so we can present petitions at the April 10-12 board public budget hearings."

Residents Alan Ruof, Pietra Check, HCA board members and others are organizing the campaign. Volunteers will take responsiblity for certain streets and keep track of responses from homes they visit. The group's goal is to have 100 percent support from the Huntington community.

In addition to the petition campaign, the group will reach out to local clubs, churches and groups about the issue. The HCA plans to send a detailed letter to each individual district supervisor.

If you would like to volunteer or share your story, please email stopthefloods@huntingtononline.org.

The Cameron Run peaked at 15 feet and flooded into homes on Fenwick Drive and Arlington Terrace on Sept. 8, 2011, evacuating 200 residents.
