Huntington, Belle Haven Voters Head to the Polls for Special Election

Voters in 13 precincts in Alexandria as well as parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties will vote for their state delegate for the 45th District.

Voters from parts of Alexandria as well as Arlington and Fairfax counties head to the polls on Tuesday to vote in the special election for their 45th District state delegate.

Voters will choose between Democrat Rob Krupicka, Republican Tim McGhee and Libertarian Justin Malkin.

Polls are open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The deadline for in-person absentee voting in this special election has passed. However, the deadline for the Office of Voter Registration to receive an absentee ballot by mail or dropped off in person by the voter is Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Alexandria's voter registration office is located at 132 N. Royal St. in Old Town.

If you're not sure if you vote in the 45th District or wonder if your registration is up to date, go to www.alexandriava.gov/Elections and click on "Am I Registered and Where Do I Vote?"

The governor set the date for the special election for Sept. 4 after the 45th District's delegate, David Englin, resigned.

Tuesday is also the first day of school for many area students and multiple public schools serve as voting sites. A spokeswoman for Alexandria City Public Schools said that schools have been working with city officials "to coordinate efforts and are ready to accommodate voters on Tuesday."

Voting was under way Tuesday in the Belle Haven and Huntington neighborhoods of southeast Fairfax County.

“It’s been steady,” said Stephen Toth, chief elections officer for the Belle View precinct, at 11 a.m. “We’re at 82, and we expect that by the end of the day we’ll be approaching a couple of hundred voters. It’s probably a pretty good turnout for this election."

The timing of the special election and the first day of school might have been fortunate, Toth said. “We’ve got a couple parents that didn’t even know about this who were bringing kids to school today and got to vote,” he said.
