Cheesy Pick-Up Lines

'Can I take your picture so I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?'

The dating site eHarmony recently conducted a query of its members regarding various aspects of relationships. One of the topics covered was the effectiveness of pick-up lines. Surprisingly (to me, anyhow), 44 percent of the women interviewed thought the technique had merit, even when the lines used were cheesy.

For those amongst us who are further removed from the days of pick-up lines, let’s first refresh our collective memories. We’re talking phrases such as:

“Hey beautiful -- that is your name, right?” … or … “Can I take your picture so I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?” … or … “I'm not actually this tall, I've got this bad habit of sitting on my wallet.” … or … “I'll make you dinner if you make me breakfast.”

Are we starting to recall this type of banter?  Is it coming back to everyone now?

Even though many of the women queried regarded pick-up lines favorably, the majority still did not. Research actually supports the fact that pick-up lines -- especially manufactured, insincere ones -- generally don’t bode well for starting a conversation or getting a relationship off the ground.

People who engage in pick-up lines tend to be regarded as funny and sociable. But on the flip side, they’re also perceived as less trustworthy and less intelligent -- essential qualities women in search of long-term relationships typically desire, according to the research.

The research did show stronger support for a direct or more innocuous approach. An example of a direct attempt would be something like, “I noticed you from across the room and knew I had to meet you”. An innocuous statement might be something like, “How about those Nats? Bryce Harper -- hot or not? Or total clown question, bro?”

But the best approach of all, per the research, is an actual introduction by a mutual friend who is highly regarded by both parties.

Patch wants to hear about your experience with pick-up lines. Ladies, have any of you had a particularly memorable one used on you? Guys, tell us about your go-to pick-up line. Do you have any in your repertoire guaranteed to make the ladies swoon?

What are some of the best (or cheesiest) pick-up lines you have heard or used?

For some reason I always think of Tom Cruise movies when I think of cheesy lines...."You've lost that loving feeling..." and "you had me at hello" off the top of my head...he always wins the girl - even if the girl has the cheesy line!
