Belle Haven Safeway to Close at End of September

Renovated store will cover 45,000 square feet.

The Safeway supermarket at the Belle View Shopping Center will close for renovations at the end of September or the first part of October, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

The supermarket is expected to reopen in March 2013, said Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle. Construction workers have already demolished a vacant spot next to the store and are renovating that section, he said.

When renovations are complete, the wall that separates the two sections will be torn down to add additional square footage to the store. The renovated supermarket will add about 5,300 square feet to expand to a total of 45,000 square feet.

The renovated store will feature a new meat and seafood department service, a Starbucks kiosk and an expanded bakery. Six self-checkout stands will be added.

The supermarket is located at 1624 Belle View Blvd. During the renovation, Safeway is encouraging shoppers to patronize the Fort Hunt Safeway, located at 7900 Fort Hunt Road in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center.

The stores are approximately 2.5 miles apart.

Any word on the bread and water place in Belle View, which has been under construction for nearly a year. It appears to have been abandoned; the project gives the shopping center a blighted look

Hi Sandy,
We haven't heard anything new recently about Bread and Water. We'll let you know of anything comes along.

I peer in the window sometimes when I'm walking by. It really does look like a discontinued project, nothing has moved around in there for months. That's not a total surprise in these economic times. But, the windows and facade were removed, and the plywood facing really does make it look abandoned. Hopefully, the center owners will resolve that while they're fixing up the rest of the property.

Protest! The Belle View Safeway must not be allowed to close! Too many people in Belle View / River Towers / New Alexandria depend on having a food store they can walk to.

Safeway should provide a shuttle to Ft Hunt Safeway to accommodate local patrons that don't rely on their cars to go shopping. I think that would be an excellent community outreach -- they are expanding to appeal to the customers, but losing customers in the process may be an unintended consequence.

And Ft Hunt Safeway never has the full complement of items I need anymore...the shelves have been vacant of a number of items I used to rely on them for --- and a lot of neighbors are unhappy. The staff is great, but moral keeps getting battered down I think. I miss the happy community we had years ago. We've shopped in Hollin Hall (Ft. Hunt Safeway is located in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center) for more than 25 years.

I'm actually very excited about this. I normally go to Belle View Safeway as a last resort. I love the Hollin Hall (Fort Hunt) Safeway, but @ARG must be joking about a shuttle from Belle View...Hollin Hall is TINY and could not handle the influx. They can barely handle the after 5pm rush now. I suspect most will venture over to the Mount Vernon Square Safeway.

Plus ... there already is a shuttle that goes by that Ft. Hunt Safeway already. It's called the 101 (Fairfax Connector). Or the 152, which goes by the Giant
