Balkan Grill Serves Traditional Food and American Favorites
Mediterranean restaurant offers wide carryout options at the Huntington Station shopping center.
The Balkan Grill can be a little hard to find, hiding under a generic cafe carry out sign in the Huntington Station strip mall. Only from right in front of the building can the window decal be seen. But, if the foot traffic was any indication, locals had no trouble finding the place.
The restaurant is small but extremely clean. I was greeted the moment I entered the building and got into line for some take-out. Only half a dozen tall stools were available for customers eating in, but almost everybody was ordering to go and many mentioned walking across the street to their apartments or condos.
The menu features items from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean as well as a selection of American style sandwiches and salads.
I ordered the grilled steak salad ($8.95), medium rare, and at the cashiers suggestion, traditional burek ($4.95). Burek is a thin pastry, filled with cheese and dill, and deep-fried. Other traditional fillings include beef, spinach and zucchini.
I managed to grab a free stool for the unexpected 15 minute wait. As I waited, unfortunately, I listened to an employee and a friend argue very loudly just feet away from me.
My food was packaged and ready, and I was delighted to get a free piece of homemade bread. I managed to ignore the delicious-looking tray of baklava ($1.95). The clerk was quick and friendly, and I headed home to enjoy.
I wasn't impressed by either item, unfortunately, but the bread was as delicious as I'd expected. The steak salad was drenched in an olive-based dressing to the point of sogginess, and my steak was certainly not medium rare—though well marinated.
The burek had an interesting taste and texture but was rather bland and greasy. I would like to try the baked burek and compare the taste.
Balkan Grill offers a lunch and dinner menu for pick up, delivery or eat in, along with specialty catering.
I would warn any newbies to be specific about order particulars. When is doubt, order it on the side or double check with the knowledgeable staff about flavors.
