West Potomac Ranked One of Best High Schools

West Potomac High School has been featured as one of the best high schools in the nation by the Washington Post.

West Potomac came in at number 226 in the 2012 Washington Post list of more than 1,800 top U.S. high schools. In all, 23 Fairfax County high schools were designated among the most demanding in the country. The schools represent the top nine percent of high schools nationwide.

The Post's Challenge Index measures public and private high schools’ ability to challenge their students. A school’s ranking is determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests given by a school to all its students by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. The index is designed to identify schools that challenge average students.

Looking at local DC Metro area rankings, Saint Anselm's (private school in DC) came out #1 of 176 metro high schools. In our local area, West Potomac was #29 and Mount Vernon was #161. The highest rated Fairfax County school was Oakton at #10.

Like most of these rankings, this scale says more about the quality of the student body (which is determined by the neighborhood--or the admission department in the case of private schools) than the quality of the education provided by the school. Take it with a grain of salt.
